Why Your Website Isn't Getting You Customers (And How to Fix It)

If your website isn't actively generating enquiries, it's not doing its job. Here are the five most common reasons — and how to fix each one.

You've got a website. It looks decent, it's got your phone number on it, and your mate said it looked "nice." But here's the uncomfortable truth: if your website isn't actively generating enquiries, it's not doing its job. A website isn't a digital business card you can set and forget. It's supposed to be your hardest-working employee — available 24/7, convincing visitors to pick up the phone, fill in a form, or book a service.

So why isn't it? After auditing hundreds of small business websites, we've found the same five problems coming up again and again. The good news is that every single one of them is fixable.

Problem 1: You're Invisible (No SEO)

The most common reason your website isn't getting you customers is devastatingly simple: nobody can find it. You could have the most beautiful website in the world, but if it's on page 5 of Google, it might as well not exist. Over 90% of all clicks go to results on the first page.

The fix: Your site needs proper SEO foundations. That means targeted service pages for each thing you do, area-specific content for where you do it, a fully optimised Google Business Profile, and schema markup so search engines actually understand your business. This isn't a one-time task — it's an ongoing process. But the foundations can be built from day one.

Problem 2: You're Too Slow (3+ Second Load Times)

Here's a stat that should make every business owner nervous: 53% of mobile users abandon a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. That's more than half your potential customers gone before they've even seen what you offer. And it gets worse — Google uses page speed as a ranking factor, so a slow site means fewer visitors AND a worse experience for those who do arrive.

The fix: Ditch the bloated platform. Optimise your images. Remove unnecessary scripts and plugins. Or better yet, build on a modern framework that's fast by default. Our sites load in under a second because speed isn't an afterthought — it's the starting point.

Problem 3: No Trust Signals

Put yourself in your customer's shoes. They've found your website. They're interested. But there are no reviews, no testimonials, no case studies, no photos of real work. No evidence that you've ever done this before. Would you hand over your money? Neither would they.

The fix: Add social proof everywhere. Display your Google reviews prominently. Show before-and-after photos. Include real testimonials with names (with permission). If you have accreditations, certifications, or awards, show them. Every piece of evidence that says "other people trust us" makes it easier for the next visitor to trust you too.

Problem 4: No Clear Call to Action

You'd be amazed how many websites we audit where we genuinely can't figure out what the visitor is supposed to do next. The phone number is buried in the footer. The contact form is three clicks deep. There's no "Get a Quote" button, no "Book Now," no clear next step.

The fix: Every page needs a clear, prominent call to action. And not just one — multiple CTAs throughout the page, because different visitors will be ready to act at different points. Make it embarrassingly easy for someone to contact you. Sticky headers with phone numbers, floating contact buttons, short forms that only ask for what you actually need. Remove every possible barrier between "I'm interested" and "I'm in touch."

Problem 5: Dated Design

Design matters more than most people think. Studies show that it takes about 0.05 seconds for users to form an opinion about your website. That's 50 milliseconds. If your site looks like it was built in 2015, visitors will subconsciously associate your business with being outdated, unprofessional, or worse — untrustworthy.

The fix: Invest in a modern, clean design that reflects the quality of your work. You don't need flashy animations or clever gimmicks. You need clean typography, professional imagery, consistent branding, and a layout that guides the eye naturally. If your competitors all have modern sites and yours looks five years old, who do you think the customer will choose?

Take the "would you hire you?" test. Open your website on your phone right now. Pretend you've never seen it before. Would you trust this business enough to hand over your money? If the answer isn't an immediate yes, your website needs work.
